Reuben Lange has honed his farming and winemaking skills over the last decade plus at diverse, yet some of the most inspirational and informative places, such as at Forlorn Hope in the Sierra Foothills, Maison Maenad in the Jura, and Division and Idiots Grace in Oregon. He founded Amiti Wines in 2022 with the goals of employing the basic tenets of good land stewardship (both in regards to his own farming as well as the vineyards from which he sources), caring for all those who work for him, and crafting wines that are meant to celebrate those he holds dear. He is deeply invested in exploring a sustainable future for Oregon and pushes the envelope when it comes to making exciting wines from hybrid varieties. Reuben farms all of his vineyards himself without any chemical inputs, and he is one of the few growers who insists on paying all of his workers, whether they be in the vineyard or cellar, a living wage. Each site that he farms and its ensuing cuvée is a reflection of lessons learned from mentors along the way. In terms of working with hybrids and atypical varieties… While Rueben loves and celebrates vinifera, he believes that the narrative of Oregon being Pinot country is false, given the challenges associated with farming it there. He believes other varieties are better suited to the climate and its ever shifting nature. For that reason, he chooses to work with non-normative varieties for the region, specifically those that he believes are well-adapted to the level of climate change he will experience in his lifetime. All of his wines are fermented with indigenous yeast and nominal sulfur is added at the final assemblage with respect to ph. Amiti is a Yiddish word Rueben interprets as the qualities of an individual who does good in the world.
